a NEW VIDEO: Mixed Media Backgrounds

whenever i get stuck with my paintings, i create backgrounds. i usually have four or five going at one time. and i'm never afraid to cover them up.

i think that's the reason why i love creating my backgrounds so much...because the process feels incredibly free-ing.

i try and apply that same freedom to all of my paintings. but sometimes i get too attached to one of my characters and tense up before covering the parts i don't like.

if i get frozen and don't want to try anything new, then i just go back to starting a new background again!

it's all part of my creative process and i've been having so much fun creating all of these backgrounds and layers, i thought i'd share a few with you...

i happened to record the process of some of these backgrounds from start to finish...i hope you enjoy the video!

with music by my friends' the wiggly tendrils

i'm super proud of the new intro and outro for my videos that my lovely husband brian put together... with stunning video footage shot by our good friend and photographer dave kreisman

we spent two days shooting around my studio and home in madison, wisconsin, so i can't wait to share more of the gorgeous videos with you soon!

happy painting!

i'll share more of these new backgrounds, loosening up techniques and how i play with layering art supplies in my newest online workshop, HOW TO PAINT AN OWL 2.

registration opens march 15 and class starts april 15.

DREAM BIG & a New OWL painting!

TITLE: Dream Big.
2.5 x 2.5 ft on canvas. Original Painting (SOLD)

one of my goals this year was to paint BIG.

i gave it a go earlier this year and just felt so intimidated by the large canvas. i felt like i had to fill up every little bit rather than leave some breathing room.

and i definitely didn't feel like my characters were worthy of taking up an entire canvas.

and then, this owl came about.

it began on a canvas i had been trying and trying to paint with a girl and bunny ears. but nothing felt right...

after layers and layers and a few months, i pulled out this canvas again and tried an owl.

now i wanted the owl to fill up the canvas. i'd loved the way my owls took up the entire piece in my smaller paintings and realized if that didn't intimidate me, this BIG canvas didn't have to either.

i could treat a large canvas the same way i did something small, but just bump everything up and have even more fun with it.

i LOVE all of the layers and texture in this painting.

i worked with all of the art supplies i love...bleeding art tissue, glitter, acrylics, ink, and vintage wallpaper.

then on top, i applied a vintage decoupage to give the piece a warm tone. and as a final touch, i added a coat of wax for a matte finish.

This owl is here as a reminder that even on a cloudy day anything is possible, knowing that all you need to do is make your intentions known and DREAM BIG.

have a wonderful weekend!
