Dreams of Peace - a NEW Mixed Media Painting

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone." -Audrey Hepburn

Painting this girl reminded me to never settle on a painting I think is just okay.

I'd had her background and most of her colors in place the entire time. But it was her face that I just couldn't get to resonate with my heart.

Until I covered her eyes.

For a few days, I left this girl like this.

I started calling her the Snow Queen. She seemed so cold and distant. Very unsure of herself and pretty petrified, which is sort of the way I felt when I thought about covering her up.

She was a good painting. But I knew I could make her better.

I started to focus on what I did like about the painting.

I knew I loved the dream catchers, the simple background, and most of her dress.

But I despised the stark white and her icy eyes.

So as I went in to cover things up, I made sure to keep what I liked. And went straight into covering up her eyes and then warming up the white with a yellow oil paint stick.

From there she softened, and I knew she needed a softer hairdo and some flowers too. And most of all, she needed to look within, which is how she got her title... DREAMS OF PEACE.

ps. How To Paint An Owl 2 is now available as a self-paced, instant-access class. And payment plans are always welcome.

  1. she's wonderful! thanks for sharing your creative process-often times i dont want to cover or change things for fear of "messing it up"--but maybe i can be more brave!!! once again-she's a beauty!

    1. thanks! it always helps me to feel like i'm not messing things up if i have a few paintings going on at once. that way, i never get too attached to just one :)

Feel free to say hello and ask questions. I would be delighted to hear from you! xo -juliette
