I started my weekly blog series CREATIVE SUGAR to promote positivity and provide a platform for everyone to share their unique stories, knowledge and experiences, showcasing the beauty, connection, and inspiration that exists in our every day. Every Tuesday I'll feature someone new from around the world.
This week on CREATIVE SUGAR, I'm delighted to share inspiration from Russty Brazil (Southern California, US).
What’s the greatest advice you’ve been given?
Don't give up when things get hard, because in the end that makes the good parts all the better.
What’s some not-so-great advice you’ve been given?
Get a "real" job, because it's important what people think about you.
I was in a quilt shop one day looking at patterns for stuffed animals that I loved. A nice lady came to offer me help and I found out that she was the creator of the patterns. We became fast friends and she encouraged me to start making art quilts even though I had no clue what I was doing, but I had this deep desire to create.
I took a class from her one day and she said something that changed my life, "There are NO rules in art quilting." I remember thinking that meant I could do anything I wanted to and it was okay. It felt like someone opened up the world to me and told me I could do whatever my hearts desire.
That was over a decade ago and I'm no longer a fiber artist, but a painter and all because someone told me that art was supposed to be fun and I could do what made me happy.
The great thing is that was just who Maggie was. She didn't think she was changing lives, she was just sharing her joy of art, and wanting you to come along with her on the adventure. Now I get to encourage people to create the art that they love and every time I do I think of Maggie and how lucky we are to be a tiny part of the great big creative community.
