CREATIVE SUGAR with Kecia Deveney

I started my weekly blog series CREATIVE SUGAR  to promote positivity and provide a platform for everyone to share their unique stories, knowledge and experiences, showcasing the beauty, connection, and inspiration that exists in our every day. Every Tuesday I'll feature someone new from around the world.

This week on CREATIVE SUGAR, I'm delighted to share inspiration from Kecia Deveney of Lemoncholy's Studio (the Jersey Shore, US).

What’s the greatest advice you’ve been given?
Take one day at a time. We have no control over anything and by letting that go we can handle  what is going on right this minute instead of worrying about what hasn't even happened tomorrow.

What’s some not-so-great advice you’ve been given?
I've learned to dismiss advice that I think is not coming from a genuine place. If I get the feeling that an ulterior motive exists, then I listen to my gut and don't buy into what they are saying.

Story:
Tucker's angel

My son, Tucker, is disabled. Disabilities are sometimes very frightening to others. They know something is wrong and it makes them uncomfortable. Their discomfort makes me uncomfortable. One time, however, at a hospital, waiting our turn for the xray room, an elderly woman sat next to us. I know she asked a  few questions about Tucker (who at the time, was still quite little, maybe 3), but not probing or intrusive. Her questions had a genuine, "I care about your little child" feel to them. Then she asked if she could hold him for a little bit. I was quite surprised by this request as I am very protective of him. However, something told me that it was okay and I gently placed him in her lap. She cooed to him and even sang him a little song. When it was our turn to get his xray done, she handed him back to me.

I looked at her and said, "thank you for cherishing my child".

And she said, "No, thank you for allowing me to be a part of his life, even if for only a few minutes".

Now almost 20 years later, I've never forgotten her. I sometimes like to tell myself that she was an angel;Tucker's angel.

  7. What a beautifull story! And how wonderfull the world would be if everyone acted like this, with true care for one another, instead of being unconfortable by some little difference...

You got to appreciate the courage of those with some kind of disability to keep on fighting and striving. If there's anything to be unconfortable about, is that you might not be as brave as they are, although you might have everything going for you. So don't look down on them, look down on you instead and seek a way to do better.

Hope Tucker gets to have many more angels in his life!

    XOXOXO

    Cathy ;)
